New light source for narrowband UVB phototherapy puts patients at risk
نویسنده
چکیده
Since its introduction in 1988, the Philips TL01 fluorescent tube has been used successfully and safely in phototherapy for many skin diseases (3-6). A major advantage was that burning of patients could be effectively controlled compared to existing photochemo-therapy modalities and broadand small-spectrum UVB treatments. This led to 311 nm irradiation becoming the treatment of choice for conditions such as vitiligo (7, 8) and Psoriasis (13, 14)

A randomized comparison of selective broadband UVB and narrowband UVB in the treatment of psoriasis.
UVB is widely used to treat psoriasis. Conventional broadband UVB lamps are less effective than narrowband UVB lamps, which have an emission peak at 311 nm. The long-term safety of narrowband UVB phototherapy is uncertain. "Selective" broadband UVB lamps, which have little emission <290 nm, are also available, but have not been adequately compared to narrowband UVB lamps. We performed a randomi...
متن کاملNo evidence for increased skin cancer risk in psoriasis patients treated with broadband or narrowband UVB phototherapy: a first retrospective study.
Phototherapy of skin diseases such as psoriasis is an effective and safe treatment modality. However, increasing the risk of skin cancer by phototherapy is a serious concern. An increased skin cancer risk occurs after prolonged photochemotherapy (PUVA). In contrast, the role of broadband UVB or narrowband UVB therapy in skin carcinogenesis of humans with psoriasis is less clear. Therefore, we i...

متن کاملGranuloma annulare treated with narrowband UVB phototherapy*
Granuloma annulare is a benign cutaneous inflammatory disease, whose lesions have spontaneous improvement in two years in 50% of cases, but there is recurrence in 40% of patients. Treatment may be topical, intralesional or systemic. The use of phototherapy with narrowband UVB is highlighted, whose mechanism of action in this disease is still unclear, probably related to the inhibition of T lymp...
متن کاملEfficacy and Side Effects of Narrowband-UVB in Early Stage Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma in Jordanian Patients
Background. Many studies, on light-skinned patients, suggested narrowband-UVB to be effective and safe for the treatment of early stage cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Objectives. To evaluate the efficacy and side effects of narrowband-UVB in treatment of early stage cutaneous T-cell lymphoma in patients with skin phototypes III, IV, and V. Methods. A total of 27 patients with the diagnosis of early...
